At Stageskool we teach students how to dance, act and sing through performing arts classes at our schools in Portchester and Gosport. Energy, enthusiasm and commitment are our only entry requirements, so students of every ability get to meet new friends and widen their social horizons within a safe, active and structured environment.
At Stageskool we pride ourselves in offering a very personal approach, giving every student the opportunity to shine. Our classes and curriculum build an understanding of the skills required within the performing arts, developing technique, confidence, imagination, teamwork and individual expression which helps students to grow in confidence and develop their communication skills. Our classes are carefully structured to accommodate the perfect balance between learning and fun.
Our singing lessons have a fresh, modern approach to vocals. They’re great fun and we aim to get the very best out of every student’s voice, developing technique and repertoire and covering both popular music and musical theatre.
Students learn the fundamentals of how to sing correctly, warming up vocally and using breathing techniques to create sound – performing in groups and for many, as confidence grows, performing solo. There are also opportunities to learn to sing with a microphone and perform at events through ought the year.
Our dance classes develop flexibility, physical strength and co-ordination. We teach a variety of dance genres including; Modern, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary and Street. Choreography is sympathetic to the individual student’s or group’s talents whilst pushing their boundaries in order to develop new skills and stage presence.
Our teachers work tirelessly to ensure routines are polished and the choreography is perfected in readiness for our annual showcase performance at the New Theatre Royal.
This year, to help focus on technique, artistry and performance skills, we will be introducing the British Ballet Organisation (BBO) dance syllabus. The bbodance syllabi provide a comprehensive structure designed to encourage the enjoyment and learning of dance for students of all ages and abilities, recognising their progress and achievement in dance.
We will be incorporating the bbodance syllabi in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Musical Theatre, and Contemporary into our classes and will offer students the option of taking examinations in the dance styles they enjoy.
Drama and Acting
Our Drama and Acting classes are designed to develop the skills necessary to communicate dramatic text to an audience, projecting an inner confidence and a physical presence with confident speech and vocal delivery.
Classes explore scripted and improvised work in various genres to prepare students by:
- Developing a strong speaking voice and good memory skills by learning and performing monologues and duologues.
- Developing creativity by exploring ideas and themes and realising them through devised dramatic performances.
- Developing an understanding of non-verbal communication by exploring body language and facial expression and putting it into a dramatic performance.
Musical theatre overlaps with the other theatrical forms, combining songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. Students are taught to communicate the story and emotional content of a musical – humour, pathos, love, anger – through words, music, movement and the technical aspects of the performance as an integrated whole.
We also offer Musical Theatre LAMDA classes where we help students to further develop the acting and singing skills required to present believable characters. Students of any ability can take part in the classes.
